No drag racing at the Hockenheimring // NitrOlympX 2021 cancelled

  • Europe’s biggest drag racing event thwarted by coronavirus pandemic
  • Next NitrOlympX will take place from 26 to 28 August 2022

As was the case last year, there will be no FIA and FIM European Drag Racing Championship round at the Hockenheimring in 2021. After the coronavirus-related cancellations of the races in Santa Pod (GB) and Tierp (Sweden), Hockenheim-Ring GmbH, organiser of the NitrOlympX, has now also announced the cancellation of the quarter-mile races in Hockenheim, scheduled for 27-29 August this year.

With the early cancellation, Hockenheim-Ring GmbH is reacting to the current developments of the coronavirus pandemic. The current critical initial situation makes concrete planning for organisers, teams and participants, a targeted organisation as well as an economic realisation of the cost-intensive major event impossible.

Especially the financial aspect weighs heavily for the Hockenheimring in these times of crisis. As the motordrome does not have a permanent drag racing track, the NitrOlympX present the organisers with the challenge of getting the quarter mile in top condition for an international championship in terms of asphalt, track safety, timekeeping etc. every year. This effort is not only associated with high material and personnel costs, but also with a long preparation period during which the adjacent Grand Prix track cannot be rented out elsewhere.

In the past, it was possible to amortise this large block on the debit side as well as other event expenses through the imperative audience income. But the crowd restrictions expected to continue in August 2021, exacerbated by limited space along the Rico Anthes Quartermile, make the NitrOlympX financially unsustainable this season. In addition, there are the strict travel restrictions for certain countries, which would have a negative influence on the international starting field.

“Even though it has unfortunately become a sad routine to cancel spectator events these days, the cancellation of the NitrOlympX 2021 is particularly painful for us. Because we know how passionately the thousands of fans, participants, helpers and partners were looking forward to this event after its cancellation last year. And that’s exactly how it is for us as organisers.

But especially in these economically difficult times, we have to minimise the coronavirus-related financial damage to the company. With the early cancellation, we are drawing the consequences from the current situation – also in order to be able to guarantee at least a certain degree of planning security with regard to the utilisation of the Grand Prix circuit which is so important. All the more reason for us to look forward to a brilliant drag racing spectacle with the NitrOlympX 2022 next year,” is the joint statement by Jochen Nerpel and Jorn Teske, both managing directors of Hockenheim-Ring GmbH.

Cancellation of the Public Race Days

The acceleration event for amateur drivers, Public Race Days, which was originally planned for 21 and 22 August, has also been affected by a cancellation this year.

New date

A date for the 2022 NitrOlympX has already been fixed: According to current planning, the event will take place from 26 to 28 August 2022. As has been the norm up to now, the Public Race Days will again be staged on the Quartermile a week before.
