Motodrom Insight // Drag racing is back in town
For two years it was quiet in the NitrOlympX paddock – much too quiet! Following this coronavirus-enforced hiatus, the world’s fastest motorsport event returns to the Hockenheim Quartermile with the 35th edition of the NitrOlympX.
When an incredible total of 15,000 horsepower thunders off all at once (26 to 28 August 2022), even the Motodrom will tremble. The luggage will include 100% high speed, action and power, plus acceleration duels at the highest level.
At this cult event of European drag racing, around 200 teams are expected again this year, eager to finally get real track under their wheels again in a wide variety of racing classes and to convert the technical knowledge gained in the last two years into tenths of a second. For participants of the FIM and FIA European Drag Racing Championship, Hockenheim is also about valuable points for the overall victory.
The wide spectrum of drag racing includes both car and motorbike classes. The ‘car fraction’ ranges from the ‘big boys’, the Top Fuel dragsters, to the Top Methanol, Pro Modified and Pro Stock classes, which all compete in the FIA European Drag Racing Championships. The professionals reach top speeds of over 500km/h. In addition, there are some amateur classes, which are no less exciting and high-level.
In the motorcycle fraction, Top Fuel, Super Twin, Pro Stock, Super Street and Junior Drag bikes will compete in the FIM Drag Racing European Championship. Here again are a variety of sportsman classes that fight hard for every hundredth of an advantage. With top speeds just under the 400km/h mark, the Rico-Anthes Quartermile is considered a dream track for bike racers.
Not only the numerous different racing classes, vehicles and race types, but also the open paddock offers fans the unique opportunity to look over the drivers’ shoulders while they are making their adjustments.
If all this still hasn’t pumped enough adrenaline through your veins, you shouldn’t miss another highlight of the weekend: the legendary night show on the Saturday evening. The organisers of the NitrOlympX kept their eye on the ball during the ‘enforced slumber’ and have come up with a programme for the popular show that will set new standards. A breathtaking mix of grandiose entertainment with lots of action and high speed, wild stunts, smoking tyres, metre-high flames and fireworks is guaranteed.
This sensational entertainment package makes the NitrOlympX an absolute highlight and a must-see event in the calendar of every motorsport fan. But beware: the addiction to adrenaline is contagious. Welcome back to the Home of Speed!
